Things to keep in mind while tying off extension ladders

Extension ladders as the name implies are ladders that can be extended or adjusted to suit your needs. Extension ladders have two sections that operate in brackets which allow them to be adjusted at variable lengths. These ladders are also known as portable ladders. The ladders cannot stand alone so require a stable structure that can provide support and sustain the load.

Ladders generally are used to perform various tasks at home and factories but are considered dangerous as they are open and exposed. In ladders it is common that ladder may swing and sway with a person’s weight and result in fall. Fall from ladders results from minor to sever injuries so necessary safety measures must be taken before using them. Extension ladder tie off requirements are designed to reduce injuries that workers may suffer while working.

A suitable extension ladder must be selected according to weight of the person and the weight of all the tools, materials and intended load. Extension ladder tie off requirements include workers to tie off ladders at the top for firmness and security and tie off at the bottom to maintain ladder stability and prevent ladder to sway due to weight. The extension ladders must extend three feet above the roof or platform. When ascending or descending the worker must face the ladder and hold the ladder rails firmly to prevent from losing balancing. Workers are also said to make sure that the ladder is erected on solid, firm ground at right angle and supported by a strong, rigid structure.

Workers are required to inspect safety measures, detect corrosions of the ladders and identify the usual wear and tear of ladder rungs, rails and other loose components. At all times workers must ensure that the ladder is placed away from power lines and wires.
