Firstly finding a stable, flat and solid ground where ladder can be placed.
As extension ladders are not self-supporting so they should be placed against solid structure like          walls which can withstand the pressure of the intended load
The ladders should be tied at the bottom to provide stability
The ladders should also be tied at the top so it is easy for worker to climb with tools
The ladders should be extended at least three feet more from the top of the place they are tied
